Rhinoplasty

Overview

As humans, the nose is one of our most prominent features. It is important to our overall appearance that it is well shaped, functions properly, and fits within the natural contours on our face. For those unhappy with the shape, size or proportion of their nose, rhinoplasty (cosmetic nose surgery) may offer the improvement they seek.

Rhinoplasty, or nose job, offers benefits to individuals of most any age. However, children and teens should wait until their facial growth is complete. For girls, this typically occurs around age 16, and for boys at age 18. Good candidates for a rhinoplasty include healthy individuals with any of the following issues:

  • A nose that is disproportionately large for the face

  • A hump or depression on the nasal bridge

  • A wide shape nose

  • A nasal tip that droops

  • An enlarged nasal tip

  • Excessively flared nostrils

  • An off-center or crooked nose

  • A nose that is asymmetrical caused by injury or birth

  • A nose that impairs breathing

Procedure

There are a couple of different ways to perform nose surgery, that being the closed technique and the open technique. Many plastic surgeons prefer the open rhinoplasty method because this approach allows them to gain a better view of the inside of the nose, as well as greater access to its support structures. The incision is made between the nostrils or under the nose near the nostrils.

Once this incision is made, the skin is pulled back and the bones, cartilage and tissue within the nose are exposed so that reshaping and reconstruction can occur. Once the incisions are closed, scarring is minimal and will not be seen. Closed rhinoplasty is less invasive. It is generally used when only mild reshaping is needed, or if the tip of the nose is being addressed .

Recovery Time

Rhinoplasty is considered an out client procedure. It is performed in an accredited surgical facility under general anesthesia. Clients will be swollen and bruised around the eyes and nose for up to 2 weeks. These are the primary side effects after surgery, but they will go away quickly if proper care is taken. Nasal packing, which is the insertion of gauze or cotton into the nasal chamber to control bleeding, may be used. After surgery, clients will wear a nose splint for a couple of days. Once this splint is removed, the newly shaped nose will be revealed. It can take a few months for the nose to gain its sensation, as well as its final contour and softness.

What to expect?

Usually, Rhinoplasty takes from three to five hours depending on the complexity of the condition of the nose. Nearly all rhinoplasty operations are done as out-client surgeries.

Bruising Afterwards

This depends again on how complex the procedure is, but in general most clients experience five to seven days of purple discoloration and swelling around the eyes and upper cheeks. The nose itself will be swollen for around ten to fourteen days or longer, but subtle resolution of the swelling at the tip of the nose can take months to go away.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is nose surgery painful?

No, there is virtually no pain following surgery. Many patients do not require analgesia.

What can I expect on the day of my rhinoplasty operation?

Once you arrive at the clinic for your nose reshaping surgery, you will be taken downstairs by our friendly nurses to be prepped for surgery and meet the anaesthetist. You will also have another chat with the surgeon, as this is the final point when the surgeon needs to know exactly what you require. Once you have had your operation, you will recuperate in our recovery room and when you have eaten a few hours later and you are ready, your surgeon will discharge you with some post-operative advice. A friend or relative is able to collect you and take you home. Before leaving the clinic our nursing staff will ensure you have everything you need including a post-operative appointment time and they are likely to give you some spare gauze to keep under the nostrils to catch any drips.

What risks are associated with rhinoplasty surgery?

Rhinoplasty is one of our most popular treatments at Personiks, and any risks associated with nose reshaping are the same as with any other surgical procedure that involves a general anaesthetic. Any specific risks will be discussed by your surgeon who will explain the nose surgery process in detail and answer your specific concerns. As always with cosmetic surgery, it is essential that the surgeon, not only understands exactly what you are looking for, and can deliver it, but psychologically it is necessary to be as certain as one can be that this desired result actually satisfies the patient.

What is the downtime after rhinoplasty surgery?

We usually recommend our rhinoplasty patients to take at least one week off work, as you will be wearing a splint for up to ten days. There is no reason however, why you should not be working from home. There may be some bleeding from the nostrils overnight or for longer if the septum or turbinate's have required treatment. You are likely to have some swelling and bruising below the eyes, if the nasal bones have been fractured. This is completely normal and will subside within the ten days. We also tell patients to avoid strenuous exercise for at least two weeks following the operation.
