Laser Liposuction Overview

Laser lipo is a non-invasive alternative to conventional liposuction to tighten skin, and reduce fat. Laser Liposuction, is an innovative FDA-approved liposuction technique for the removal of unwanted body fat. It utilises laser technology to break down fat cells. It is a less invasive alternative to traditional liposuction surgery with minimal cuts and bruising and a good skin tightening effect, generally laser liposuction requires less downtime. It is performed under local anaesthetic with sedation, no overnight hospital stay is required.

Based on the concept of traditional Liposuction, through Smartlipo to the revolutionary Laser Lipo, Mr Guru Karna has pioneered the way forward in Laser body contouring surgery

The demand for minimally invasive fat reduction procedures is continuously increasing and laser lipo is the ultimate answer, as it is designed to remove unwanted stubborn fat and tighten the skin through a minimally invasive laser procedure.

Which Body Areas can be covered in Laser Liposuction?

Laser Lipo – A revolution in body contouring

During this procedure, a laser penetrates the skin without causing damage to the epidermis, to heat up the subcutaneous fat cells. This damages the fat cells, which are cleared away naturally by the lymphatic system over time. The device we use cools the skin during treatment to reduce any discomfort that may be felt, and up to four applicators can be used in separate areas during one session, held against the skin with straps.

Laser technology is utilized to rupture the fat cells, allowing the cells to drain away more easily and causing the collagen threads in the dermis to shrink. The effect is to make the skin over the treated area appear smoother and tighter after the fat has been removed.

This advanced technique allows for reducing the localised fat tissue due to the specific effect of the laser producing a thermal and mechanical effect that provokes the rupturing of the fat cells membrane, transforming them into an oily emulsion which is then scud out by a micro cannula

Further benefits include a smaller incision, less bruising and swelling due to use of laser instead of manual effort to break down fat, and a shorter post-operative recovery times due to tendency to perform SmartLipo MPX under local anaesthesia.

Best Candidates

The best candidates to Laser lipo are those individuals who are physically active, in good health, whose weight is normal, or almost normal, and have good skin tone and realistic expectations.

Age alone is not a significant influencing factor, as Laser lipo is a good choice for those who have taken all possible steps for losing accumulated fat without positive results and who wish to improve their silhouette.

Laser Lipo is considered to be the ultimate technique to reduce fat and tighten the skin in any part of the body, including the face, chin, and jawline with smooth and fast recovery. Laser lipo it is not a treatment for obesity.

Experience And Precision

Laser Lipo is a process that requires experience and precision, which is exactly what our clinicians bring to the operating table for our patients. To ensure this, the clinic holds regular doctor training days where our experts come together and share their knowledge and experiences with each other to keep up with the latest developments and procedures.

What makes Laser Liposuction different to normal liposuction?

Laser Lipo removes fat by breaking down your fat cells with a laser before they are removed. It is less invasive and therefore can have fewer side effects than traditional liposuction. Laser-assisted liposuction has been around in India for about f years.

Laser-assisted liposuction works on small, localised areas of fat on the face and body. Areas that can be treated with laser-assisted liposuction include the face, neck, jowls, arms, back, gynecomastia (or male breasts) and loose skin.

Just as with any surgical procedure, laser-assisted liposuction isn't for everyone. The ideal candidate is someone who is in generally good health and close to a normal body weight, but who has areas of fat that just won't budge, even with diet and exercise.

Advantages of Laser Liposuction:

  • Laser Liposuction does not require a general anaesthetic, patients will have a local anaesthetic with sedation.
  • Laser liposuction is not as invasive as traditional liposuction.
  • Minimal downtime – it is a walk-in-walk-out procedure with no overnight hospital stay.
  • Stimulates collagen production, resulting in tighter skin for many patients.
  • Liposuction is especially effective in areas such as the buttocks, hips, thighs, abdomen, upper arms, breasts, chest, neck/chin and knees.

Laser Lipo can be performed either under local anesthetic or under light general anesthetic and is treated as a day case, so there is no need to stay in the hospital overnight.

Mr Guru Karna, uses the most advanced Laser Lipo technology, which equipped with themost sophisticated safety features, the Smartsense and the thermal guide.

The SmartSense delivery system contains an advanced microchip called the Accelerometer, which is inserted into the intelligent handpiece and gives equal amounts of laser energy all the way through the procedure which prevents the risk of indentations and irregularities of the skin and gives smooth and tighter skin.

ThermaGuide which constantly measures the temperature under the skin and controls the output of energy, ensuring that the treatment area stays within a safe range so that it is hot enough to work efficiently, but not so hot as to cause the patient harm.

The Laser lipo should be performed only in a proper surgical laser operating theatre and it is defined as a minimally invasive laser surgical procedure. It allows for a rapid recovery and return to a normal lifestyle after one day of the treatment.

Recovery / Downtime

Downtime is minimal for Laser Liposuction and you can get back to your daily routine quite quickly. The small incisions made during the procedure will not require stitches. At Personiks, our medical experts recommend taking up to 2-5 days off work depending on the areas being treated. Your medical professional will advise you during your consultation. However, because there may be some bruising and swelling, it’s best to wait two weeks before you can start light exercise (swimming, walking uphill and cycling) and more strenuous exercise around 4-5 weeks. Flying is not advised for up to 2 weeks.

Laser Liposuction FAQ's

What areas can be treated with liposuction?

Liposuction is suitable for fat removal from virtually any part of the body, but popular areas include the lower back, inner thighs, upper arms, stomach, chin, hips, abs, knees, loins and ankles.

It is also popular for men around the breast area for a condition called 'gynaecomastia'.

Does liposuction work and how long do the results last?

You may be wondering if liposuction really works – to put it simply, yes!

Liposuction provides a quick, safe and effective solution for permanent removal of unwanted excess fat deposits from the body. When you lose weight, by diet or exercise, all your fat cells shrink in size, but they do not disappear.

With liposuction the cells themselves are removed and are therefore not available to become enlarged again under any circumstances. Even if you put on a lot of weight the new relative shape remains.

What is recovery from liposuction like?

The results of liposuction typically come in stages, varying by individual. You’ll likely see some results immediately after surgery, but swelling and bruising are normal and can take weeks to resolve. Some residual swelling can persist for several months. Most people see good results from 6 weeks but final results 6 - 12 months after surgery.

It is completely normal to experience minor swelling, bruising and tenderness following liposuction, but bruising will subside completely within 3 weeks.

You can usually commence normal daily activities and exercise as soon as you are comfortable, but in general the only restriction is to wait until your stitches are removed (7-10 days post surgery). Sometimes when large amounts of fat are removed patients are somewhat anaemic and need to take iron for a few weeks and you may be asked to wear a support garment to reduce bruising and swelling.

What kind of anaesthesia will I need for liposuction?

The procedure can be done under local or general anaesthesia, but can be uncomfortable, slower and more difficult to obtain good results under local anaesthesia. We would reserve this for small areas, such as the neck, or smaller pockets of fat. We use a variant anaesthesia called TIVA (Total Intravenous Anaesthesia) that is delivered by our team of top anaesthetists. Intravenous delivery enables our anaesthetic team to monitor the depth of anaesthesia more closely using a measurement of the brainwaves. The result is that you will wake up feeling much better than traditional anaesthesia and will be ready to go home the same day.

Is liposuction right for me?

Both men and women undergo liposuction every year to achieve a variety of different goals. For men, liposuction can often successfully treat gynecomastia and other fat areas around their torso, while women use it more commonly around the stomach, hips and thighs. If one or more of the following apply to you, liposuction is an option to consider:

1. You have excess fat deposits on your hips, belly, thighs, neck or chest that won’t respond to diet or exercise.

2. You feel like certain areas are out of proportion with the rest of your figure. Reducing excess fat on one area of the body can bring it into better balance with your natural features.

Liposuction is excellent for reducing areas of fat and sculpting a beautifully natural contour, and using liposuction to remove excess fat on one area of the body can make you seem more in proportion. The ideal liposuction patient has localised fat deposits & good skin tone.

However, it’s important to have realistic expectations about what liposuction can achieve. If any of the following apply to you, then liposuction may only offer limited success in helping you achieve your goals. Your cosmetic surgeon can recommend the options best suited to your needs.

1. You have loose, sagging skin. Liposuction is designed specifically to target fatty tissue, it will not significantly improve the appearance of loose skin. Other body contouring procedures, such as a tummy tuck or body lift, may be better options for you.

2. You want to lose a significant amount of weight. Liposuction can improve your shape, which can help you look thinner and more fit, but it’s not a weight loss method. While some overweight patients can benefit from the reshaping effects, the most satisfied patients tend to be happy with their weight prior to surgery.

3. You are just looking to address cellulite. While liposuction can remove fat, it cannot always remove the appearance of cellulite. If it is just cellulite and not fat removal that is your main concern, we recommend Cellulaze.

What are the alternatives to liposuction?

Liposuction surgery is not the solution for every patient, and if you have any of the following concerns you may want to look at alternative options:

Regarding non surgical alternatives to removing stubborn pockets of fat, there is very little that provides the same, permanent effect quickly. Please see our non surgical fat reduction page for more information on this.

What are the different types of liposuction?

Our founder, Dr. GuruKarna, pioneered Liposuction and introduced it into the Hyderabad 36 years ago. The basic technique remains, but he has continued to develop and refine the procedure, so that now the Personiks offers various liposuction techniques, but only those, which are considered safe and effective and have specific uses.

Traditional liposuction: We generally use traditional simple liposuction to remove small areas of fat and usually under local anaesthesia, such as a bulge or lipoma. It is particularly useful for treating the neck and the chin, as it is at least as effective as any other technique, is simple and has the fewest potential complications. We use this regularly to harvest fat for processing and re-injection as fat grafting.

BodyJet or Water Assisted Liposuction (WAL): This is an enhancement of the traditional technique with the added ability to inject local anaesthetic fluid at the same time as carrying out the liposuction. This fluid pulses from the end of the cannula like a low-pressure washer helping to mechanically dislodge fat. Large volumes can be removed quickly and efficiently. It is particularly good with more difficult areas such as the breast, where the fat is more firmly fixed.

Power Assisted Liposuction (PAL): MicroAire and Lipomatic are two of several mechanically enhanced techniques. They remove the fat as the motorised cannula moves back and forth, sideways or rotates. It is very effective and popular amongst surgeons, primarily because there is less physical effort involved.

Laser Assisted Liposuction (LAL): The most successful of these techniques is the Smartlipo, now in its third generation, Smartlipo Triplex. We are lucky to have the pioneer of this treatment, Mr Al-Ayoubi, with his huge experience using the technique in all areas. As in all liposuction, there is skin tightening, but the laser enhances this, particularly around the inner thighs and arms where the skin is thin.

Cellulaze: Subcision is the standard minor surgical technique in which tethering fibres are cut through tiny stabs. It has been recently popularised by an expensive adaptation called Cellfina. Cellulaze however, does all this by laser, but in addition has a second laser which shrinks the skin. It can also treat large areas at a single session.

We do not use ultrasound techniques, popularised in the Hyderabad such as Vaser, as we consider that it has no advantage and adds unnecessary complications.

What are the side effects of liposuction?

At Personiks we have developed the best protocols for the best results with lowest level of risk. Whilst there are always minimal risks associated with all types of surgery, we take direct steps to mitigate these:

We treat all our patients in our own dedicated hospital in which we control and maintain standards to the highest levels.

All procedures are carried out as day cases, allowing patients to get home to their own home environment and reducing the risk of infection. Our post-operative infection rates are among the lowest in the country.

We only allow surgeons to practice who have demonstrated a track record of being amongst the most skilled in the country. With carefully selected techniques, we avoid uneven results.

We avoid techniques such as ultrasound Vaser which can burn the skin and cause collections of fluid (seroma) which have to be drained.

We provide comprehensive post-operative care at the hands of our expert team of cosmetic nurses.

Does the skin become loose and flabby after liposuction?

All techniques of liposuction tighten the skin. This tightening will be more significant where the skin is thin, such as in the neck and arms. Elsewhere, where the skin is heavier, it will generally be sufficient to take up the extra laxity due to the removal of fat. In areas where the skin is already hanging in folds, such as the hanging bottom or abdominal apron, these folds tend to remain. However, where there are folds of heavy fat over the lower back, liposuction can make a very significant improvement. In extreme cases of fat removal, where the skin is loose, such as the abdominal apron, or where there has been significant weight loss, a combination of liposuction and skin excision may be the better option.
